In the 2014 ibrutinib clinical trial (first ever international WM clinical in Australia) the first Australian enrolled was WMozzies Michael van Ewijk.   The Principal Investigator of this trial in Sydney is Associate Professor Judith Trotman (one of the Australian WM doctors in the IWMF International Directory). The Victorian trial Principal Investigator is Dr Constantine Tam (also in the IWMF International Directory).

It is encouraging for Australia that Pharmacyclics & Janssen Pharmaceuticals in January  2015 received approval from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for  ibrutinib for the treatment of Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia. It is hoped that approval by the FDA will assist to pave the way for Australian PBS funding.
